As it says in the link above, VWD is a bleeding disorder caused by a defect or deficiency of Von Willebrand Factor in the blood. Here is how the doctor explained it to me when I was diagnosed: “Let’s say you get a cut on your finger. The Von Willebrand factor in the blood joins together with platelets to form a kind of a patch to stop the bleeding. Once a scab forms and the skin starts to heal, the patch goes away. In my body, and others with the same type of VWD, the patch takes longer to form, and goes away too soon.” For me, that leads to clusters of bleeding. So if I cut my finger, not only does it take longer to stop bleeding, but it is very likely that a few minutes or hours later, it will start bleeding again.
There are several types of VWD. I don’t know which type I have. I’m sure the doctors told me at one point, but I don’t remember. Everyone with VWD experiences it differently. As it says in the link above, VWD is mostly inherited, meaning it runs in families. I experience bleeding issues mostly with my period and nose bleeds. Someone in my family who likely also has VWD, has issues with mouth bleeding. Everyone is different.
If you have VWD and feel comfortable, share in the comments what is the biggest concern for you.
